Hindi Translator / Contributing Editor

Open

A part-time role for a writer who can produce Hindi prose with the same care we give the English. We pay per piece, edit twice, and credit by name.

What you would do

Take a finished English essay (1,500–2,500 words, on culture, history, or current affairs with an Indian throughline) and produce a finished Hindi essay alongside it. The Hindi piece is not a translation — it is a version. You may re-phrase, re-cite, even change a metaphor if the Hindi reader is better served by something else. The editor will work two passes with you.

You would also occasionally originate a piece in Hindi first. Anything from a long essay on a Premchand re-reading to a 700-word note on a current event. We commission these the same way.

What we are looking for

  • Strong, plain Hindi prose — not Sanskritised display-Hindi, not Hinglish.
  • Fluent English reading comprehension; you do not need to be a published English writer.
  • A specific area of interest you can write about with confidence (folk-music traditions, the Hindi novel after 1980, the Hindi belt's media history — pick your own).
  • Time for two edit rounds per piece, with a one-week turnaround.

What we pay

  • Per-piece, paid on publication, with a kill-fee if we cancel after assignment.
  • Rates depend on length and difficulty, on the higher end of what bilingual Indian publications currently pay.
  • We will share the specific figure as the first thing in our reply, before you commit any time.

How to apply

Click Apply by email below. The subject line will already say what we need. Attach:

  1. A short cover note (three paragraphs is plenty) describing what you like to write about and why this role is interesting.
  2. One sample of your Hindi prose — published or unpublished, any length, any subject.
  3. Optional but welcome: one sample of your English reading taste — a short note (200 words) on a piece in English you wish someone had translated.

We reply to every applicant within ten days.
